“Dad, I don’t understand why I have to go in there,” the little brown haired boy was pointing at a store with an elegant sign and jewelry cases in the front windows, a look of pure horror covering his face. “Those girls all smell funny.”
“Wes, you want to get your mother something she’ll really like for Christmas or not?” Cain was looking down at his son, as he pushed his hair out of his face. “Doesn’t she deserve something pretty to wear? Besides, do you want your old man to have to go in there alone?”
“Well, yeah, I wanna ‘er to have something pretty but…gees, Dad, can’t you just get Aunt Evie to go get it? She’s a girl, like Mommy.” Cain couldn’t help but laugh, Wesley would do just about anything to get out of shopping for ‘girly stuff’ as he called it. Even something as simple as a necklace seemed like the end of the world to the five year old. To him, girls had cooties.
“Nope, we gotta get it, or mommy will get mad at your dear old dad, and then where will I be?”
“Sleeping in the guest room across the hall from me, like last time?” The little boy asked, hazel eyes sparkling.
“Yeah, exactly, so c’mon.”
“Fine, but Dad, can I have a sledge for the snow, you know, before Chirstmas, even though Mommy said no?”
“We’ll talk about it, okay?”Cain took Wes’s hand as they crossed the hallway of the mall.

"Cain!" Eva yelled from 20 or 25 feets away, jogging towards her friend with the single small bag she carried, with the label of the mall's bookstore on it. "Hey! Fancy meeting you here!"

“Hey Eva,” Cain said, as he stopped, picking his son up by the hand to move him out of a man’s way as he ran past.
“Hey! Watch it Mister, kids in the damn hallway too you know!” Cain rolled his eyes, glancing down as he sat Wes’s feet back on the floor.
“Yeah, same I guess. So,” his attention was back on Eva, “What brings you to the wonders of the mall, holiday shopping? Gotta love it, huh?”
Wes had wiggled his hand out of Cain’s, to hug Eva’s leg tightly.
“Aunt Evie, will you do me a favor?” The little boy looked up at Eva with a smile.

Eva laughed and picked the little boy up so she could look him in the eyes without the both of them being run over. "What is it, Wes? I say no to target practice with anything more dangerous than nerf guns, that's what your dad and Uncle Jack are for." she smiled and looked over at Cain
"Christmas shopping, you crazy? I still have a couple weeks left, right?" she winked and twitched the bag in her hand slightly. "New dictionary and some source materials. I have a big transmating proeject right now."

Wesley laid a little hand on Eva’s shoulder, his eyes right with hers, and he even had that little pout that got him everything he wanted from Rose. “No, Aunt Evie, this is important.” He shook his head, adding as he bit his lip and arched one eye brow, sounding as serious as a five year old can. “I don’t even think Uncle Jack would wanna help this time. It’s baddd.”
He looked over his shoulder at Cain, who was standing there in disbelief. He turned back to Eva. “Dad’s making me… go shopping, for Mommy. And I don’t really think he knows what he’s doing. But he says we gotta get something ‘pretty’, but isn’t Mommy pretty enough? I think we need help Aunt Evie. I really don’t like shopping for girls, they’re gross. ‘Cept for Mommy, but still, there’s other girls in there…” He added, this time with a big smile, as he pointed at the shop. “Want to go in there and get us something for Mommy?”
“Wes, I thought you wanted to get something for Elizabeth? She’s a girl,” Cain interrupted.
“Dad, I told you, Lizzy is not a girl, she’s a friend. There’s a difference.” Wes had put stress on the words ‘girl’ and ‘friend’.

"I'll go in there right now." Eva grinned and took a few steps towards the store, pretending to forget she was carrying him

“Aunt Evie, no!” Wes all but yelled. “Put me down first!”
Cain started laughing, taking a few steps closer to the store; he might get something for Rose by midnight. “But Wes, man, she’s going, isn’t that what you wanted?”
“Yes, but not taking me with her!” He pouted; it looked like he might actually cry.

"C'mon, Wes, and I'll show you something cool I learned about these stores." she got him inside and went up to one of the countes that dominated half the store with it's glass cases and shiny things. The other was an arrangement of less expensive silver jewelry on felt pads, but she figured Cain'd want something nice for Rose, and he could afford it.
Looking around for what she was looking for, she moved over to a glass bowl on one of the counters, pulling a handful of jellybeans out of it and handing them to Wesley. "See Wes, free candy!" she grinned lopsidedly at the boy.

“Okay, so it’s not that bad,” Wes said, smiling as he took three more jelly beans and popped them into his mouth. “Thanks, Aunt Evie,” he smiled, before kissing her on the cheek, his lips a little sticky from jelly bean sugar.
Cain had managed to make it through the door too, and was bent over the case closest to the exit. He definitely looked like the typical husband shopping for jewelry.
“Find what you’re looking for?” He jumped at the sound of a voice. An older black haired woman was standing on the other side of the case.
“No, not really. I don’t have a clue what I’m doing,” he answered truthfully.
“Shopping for Mother? Sister perhaps?”
“Wife.”
“Oh, so we got something riding on this one,” she replied, he suspected she dealt with his kind often. “Got anything at all in mind, honey?”
“No, but nothing in silver. Has to be gold. Wait just a second, I gotta get my son,” he said, eyes darting around the room for Eva and Wesley.
“Wes, get Aunt Evie to come here, we’re getting something for your mother. I want to make sure she thinks Rose will like it.”

Eva, having already set Wesley down, was wandering around the store rather uncomfortably. <Just had to be THIS store, didn't it.....? Why did I even come in here?>

"Alright, need presents for...well, everybody." Wika was muttering under her breath as she made her way through the mall. She was home from her NYC Design School for the holidays. She'd just gotten in that morning and had planned to suprise her parents and little brother with thier Christmas presents early.
"Well, Mom likes shiney things, so..." She headed for the jewlery store.

"Auntie Evie! Come here!" Wesley had already spotted the woman, and was now pulling her arm toward Cain. "Daddy is awaitin' for us! You're a girl, so you'll know if Mommy will like the girly thing Dad picks out for her."
"Wes, let go of Eva, it's rude to pull someone like that," Cain snapped, pointing a finger at his son. Wesley dropped Eva's arm.
"But...but, you pulled he through Toy'r'Us like that last week," the little boy muttered, looking up at Cain wiht one hand on his hip. 'Dpes that mean you're rude?"
"Yes. But I'm allowed, now get over here, and ask Eva nicely." The older woman behind the counter was pulling out just about every piece of gold they had.
"Aunt Evie, will you please come over here and help Daddy?"

"Something in gold, something in gold..." Wika cursed herself quietly as she skimmed over the various rows of jewlery. "Ugh, too many to pikc from, maybe I should shop for Dad and the Dred Kindergardener Wesley first..."
She started to wander out of the store, chewing on the end of a section of her purple-streaked hair. Her roommate had insisted on toying with her hair before she went hme for vacation and she'd ended up looking like she'd massacered a a wine vinyard. Wika puased at the sound of her aunt's vice and turned to look. Her eyes widened at the sight of Eva, Wes and her father.
She scrambled behind a display of costume jewlery, trying to hide. She'd really wanted to suprise her family and would rather have them see her new hair clor at home rather than having her father freak out in public.

“Okay, darlin’, I got lots of lovely gold pieces,” the older woman was yapping to Cain about jewelry. He’d pretty much decided that this wasn’t really his thing.
“Eva, help,” he said, leaning over on the case, as he touched a gold locket with diamonds around the oval. “Think she’d want diamonds?”
Westley had managed to slip off in his father’s moment of confusion. “What are you doing here?!” He asked suddenly, his face actually lighting up as his little eyes landed on Wika. He’d been playing ‘mountain lion’, sneaking around the store and making as little noise as possible. “Wika! You’re s’pose to be at school; did you skip and tell Mommy you were sick this morning?” He acted as if it were nothing that his sister was hiding behind at display of fake jewelry. Until he noticed her hair. Wesley gasped. “Gawly…Wika…I think your hair is turning into a grape. It’s purple.”

"Gawd, you're buying her jewelry and you don't even know what she'd like?" Eva sighed. As if she paid attention to Rosie's choice in jewelry. She rubbed her forehead and started looking voer the peices again

Wika grinned down at her little brother then scooped him up in a hug. "Hey, buddy. I'm on vacation from school for Christmas so I decided to come home and see my favorite little brother." She put him down and ruffled his brown hair. "
She smiled warmly and laughed at his comment about her hair. "Yeah, all they serve us for breakfast is grape jelly and toast so my hair is turning purple. Just don't tell Dad, alright? I wanna suprise him and Mom."
"Boy, you're getting big...How've ya been, pal?"

“Well, let’s see, I’ve never given her a necklace. Last year I got her a bracelet,” Cain sighed, running a hand through his hair. “This is why I need you Eva, I know she likes jewelry…but, hell, I dunno. Maybe I’ll just get her a sweater, say to hell with it. Putting thought into this is causing us both griefs.”
“It just ain’t worth it; maybe Rose would be just as happy with a new wedding band, now that, I can pick out. I think.”
“Wika, you’re squishing me again,” Wesley said, hugging his sister back. “And by the way, I’m your only little brother. Duh.”
“You know, I don’t think Dad will think your hair is cool like I do when you surprise him, actually, he might get mad. You know, his face still turns really red…and it’s still really scary. Please don’t get him upset again Wika, stop eating the grape jelly on your toast. Okay?” He was biting his bottom lip slightly and shaking his head every very words.
“And I’ve grown, like,” he held up a hand, a little higher then his head, “this big since you went away. And I’d say I’m pretty good, school isn’t fun though…I dunno why you wanted to go more after that big party you had last year. Are you gonna get dressed up in a blue nightgown this year too?” He sighed, pouting a little. “Am I gonna have to go again?”
“I bet Mommy will make me…Oh!” His mind flipped topics. “You got here just in time! We’re buying Mommy something for Christmas…something pretty, that she’ll like, because she’s a girl.”

Wika laughed and kissed Wesley on the forehead. "Becuase you're my only, that's exactly why you're my favorite."
She looked up and around for any sign of their father. "Mind if I help you two look? I need to get mom a present anyway." She grinned. "I'll switch to strawberry, how 'bout that?"
She picked up her young brother again and walked over to Cain, being sure his back was to her. "Excuse me," she grinned as she poked him in the back of the shoulder, "but would this happen to belong to you?" She meant Wes.

“I better be your favorite,” he giggled, wiping the kiss off his forehead with a slight look of disgust. “I don’t know about the ‘berry, Wika. Won’t that just be pink?”
“Wes, you’d better not have broken something,” Cain turned around to face his children. “Wika?”
