Wika looked up at her father with a sheepish smile. "Hey, Daddy...Merry early Christmas?"

Wes was grinning from ear to ear, as he stood beside Wika. Cain looked Wika over.
“What in the hell did you do to your hair?”

Wika laughed and shook her hair. "Like it? My roomate insisted on giving me a 'new look' before I came home." She ruffled Wes's hair. "I think Wes here likes it."

“I’m glad someone does,” Cain replied, shaking his head before hugging his daughter.
“I can’t believe you let someone in school dye your hair, Wika. Your mother’s gonna flip.”
Wesley was still smiling. “No, Dad, it’s from grape jelly, not dye. She’s not an egg.”

Wika hugged her father back. "How is mom? I've missed ya'll so much since I've been gone. How're Uncle Jack and Aunt Eva? You guys seen Kait lately?"
She looked down at Wes for a second and cracked a huge smile. "Why do you have to be so cute, palie?"

“She’s fine.” Cain replied, “Jack and Eva are fine too. In fact, Eva’s in here somewhere, she was just standing here a second ago. We’re trying to figure out what to get your mother for Christmas.”
Wesley had weaseled his way in between the two. “Why? Well, because it’s my job. That’s why,” he was grinning.
“Wes, stop being annoying,” Cain said, patting Wes on the head.

Wicked picked him up again and grinned back at her father. "Aw, I was worse. Remember when I went through that repeating everything you said phase?"

“Believe me, nothing could ever make me forget,” Cain said, shaking his head and laughing a little. “You did that for a while.”
“Yeah, look Dad; Wika doesn’t think I’m annoying!” Wesley piped in, hugging his sister.
“You know how you said you didn’t like girls, Wes. Well I hate to break it to you, son, but your sister falls into that category.” Cain said, sighing as he glanced back at the jeweler woman. “Okay, back to business. Picking something out for Rose.”

Wika grinned at her brother. "Sadly, he's right, pal. But remember this, you can't get cooties, from grils you're related to, like me, or mom."
She looked to Cain. "What were you gonna get her? I was thinking an engraved bracelet."

“Or like Aunt Evie,” Wesley added, grinning. “Good thing too, ‘cause Girl cooties are the worst kind….they’re ew.”
“I got her a bracelet last year, remember? What ‘bout a locket? You can engrave those too,” Cain said, looking like he just wanted to get something and go home. “I can’t get her the same this year as last.”

"Oh, right....Sure, an engraved locket sounds great, dad. Hey, how about I finish up shopping here and you head on home? I'll even keep the kid."

“See, I knew there was a reason I thought you always were a good kid,” Cain said smiling, happy to be going home, minus a child to boot.
“Wes, you’d best behave. If your sister tells you gave her any lip at all, you’re hide has had it. Understand?” Cain was giving Wesley that stern father look.
“Yes, sir,” Wesley replied, smiling. “I won’t give Wika any trouble at all. Promise.”
“Okay, I’m going over here to order this locket thing, and then I’m off. I’ll see you both later,” he started toward the counter. “Love both of you, be safe.”

Wika waved. "See ya at home, Dad. Don't tell mom I'm home though, alright?"

“Fine, but I s’pose I’ll just have to tell her I lost Wesley somewhere between the bows in Wal-Mart and the mall.” He laughed, adding quickly, “Kidding, I’ll tell her he’s with Eva and Jack.”

Wika grinned. "Sounds good to me." She turned to the jewlery display case again.

Ten minutes later Cain was basically dancing to the car as he started home.
“Rose!” He dashed into the living room to find her sitting on the couch. “Guess what, babe! Eva took Wes with her!” He jumped, putting a hand up to his ear as if to listen for something.
“God, do you hear the silence? I hadn’t heard it in so long I forgot what it sounded like.”
The next moment he’d plopped down beside Rose on the couch. “Alone time, what are we s’pose to do with that again?”
“Wika, I bet Mommy isn’t going to be happy with your hair,” he was tapping his fingers loudly on the glass casings. “Because well, yours is still yellow, and…” He put a hand up and whispered the next part, “Mommy got a gray hair.”
He was normal the next moment. “Daddy says we don’t bring it up, because then she keeps asking if she has any more. And he’s sick of looking for her.”
"You can even ask Aunt Evie, she knows all 'bout it. Mommy complains to her I think, even though Daddy says he still thinks Mommy's pretty."

Rose blinked at him a few times. "O...kay...." She hadn't seen him this...hyperactive in years.
Wika bit back a laugh. Why did Wes have to be so adorable? She turned away from the disply and knelt down to Wes's level. "Really? Mom's going gray already? Huh."

"It wouldn't have anything to do with a certain little boy, of course." Eva grinned, walking back over. "I think he's giving ME gray hairs, and I don't even live with him." she glanced back once at the jewelry display she'd been looking at and shoved her hands into her jacket pockets with a mischevious smile. "Now, if you two don't need me for anything else, I'd better get to work before Ama finds out what I've been doing all day." Ama, actually Amelia, was Eva's personal editor and babysitter for her translating job

Wika smiled. "Alright, Aunt Evie. We'll see you later, right?" She hugged the shorter woman, grinning. "S'great to see ya again."

“Please, babe, don’t be to damn thrilled.” Cain said, smiling as he slung an arm around his wife. “Wouldn’t want you to have a heart attack, or get another grey hair.”
“Yeah, Wika, you should have seen, she freaked!” he smiled, “I thought it was funny.” “Hey, I didn’t do it,” Wesley said in defense, holding up a hand. “That’s what happens when you hit forty. Or at least that’s what dad said…” His tune changed a moment later. “Well, bye Aunt Evie, have fun at work…I hope your boss lady doesn’t get mad at you.”
