Jack downed his food in record time, but dawdled around the house, unsure if Eva wanted a few minutes to compose or if she wanted to get it over with. He pocketed his car keys, making a final trip to the bathroom to splash water on his face. He was not nervous because there was nothing to be nervous about. Kait would love Eva and they would be happy. After drying his face, he headed towards Eva, lightly touching her arm. “Ready?”

"Yeah..." Eva sighed slightly. She had changed clothes into something that looks less like she planned on sitting around the house today and put makeup on. There was nothing else she could do, no other reason to put this off.

“It’s gonna be fine.” Jack reassured her, heading towards the truck.

"Wish I was as confident as you..." Eva sighed slightly. "How d'you do it?"

“There’s nothing to be nervous about.” Jack shrugged, opening the truck door for her. “She’s just a kid, she’s not…”
<She’s not her mother.>

"Just a kid...?" Eva grumbled. "She's YOUR kid, Jack. This is important..."

“I know she’s mine and I know it’s important,” Jack rubbed at his neck. “But she is just a kid. She’s not gonna hate you on sight, she’s not gonna hate you at all. She isn’t stupid.”

Eva sighed and rubbed her forehead. "You're right, you're right.... I can't help but worry, though..."

“She’s got my genes,” Jack smirked. “She won’t be able to not like you.”

Eva laughed and shook her head. "You probably could if you tried hard enough, y'know."

“Hm,” Jack squinted at her for a moment, then grinned. “Nope. No can do.” He kissed her cheek, moving to the driver’s side of the truck before getting in and starting the engine.

Eva laughed and got in, officially done with bringing up this topic unless jack had more to say

Jack made it through the whole ride to his mother’s house without once showing how ridiculously afraid he was of his own daughter’s reaction, more for pride’s sake than Eva’s.
When they got there, the introduction went without a hitch. Kait might have inherited her mother’s looks but not her lack of social graces, but Jack credited that more to nurture than nature.
The ride home took on an awkward silence after the first few minutes and Jack would have been concerned if he hadn’t known that Kait was usually quiet in front of new people. He thought, a tad late, that maybe he should have told Eva this.
“So,” Kait drawled, seated between her father and Eva. “Grandma said you knew dad when you two were in high school.”

"Yesh." Eva said a tad uncomfortably. Silence was much easier; she didn't have to think about what to say. "We sort of took care of me, I guess..."

“Cool.” Kait grinned at her dad. It was kinda romantic, them being high school sweet hearts. And besides that, her mom had Xander; so she didn’t see why her dad shouldn’t have someone too.

Eva sighed and rubbed the bridge of her nose, wishing for all the world she had her glasses. In fact, she should be at home, working. Home being Jack's place, and she wondered when she had formed that idea. Still, she knew this was more important than a far off deadline, but still. Languages she understood. Kids were a different story.

“And,” Kait glanced at Eva. “I’m supposed to call you what?” Xander had always been Xander to her, but she hadn’t known Eva nearly as long and she probably wanted to be called something else.
Cass sighed, putting away the last of her things out of her suitcase. “Xander?” She yelled, kicking her carry-on bag under the bed.
“Is my toothbrush in your bag?”

"Ah..." Eva glanced at Jack, hoping for some input or support- anything, really.
"Don'no." Xander yelled back from the kitchen. "D'you need it right now?"

“Is just Eva alright?” Jack glanced at her sideways.
“No.” Cass grumbled, heading towards Xander. She grinned, hugging him from behind. “You wanna call Jack, see if he’ll drop off Kait?”

"Yeah, that should work." Eva recovered from her freeze up, grinning slightly
"I'll grab the phone as soon as you let me go." Xander chuckled. "No rush."
