Cassie sat in Xander’s car, sulking in a way that could be easily mistaken for grief, curled up against the cold on his lap and wrapped up in his arms and coat. It was early, too early for the funeral home to open, but they had both agreed that they should be the first ones there, that they should be the first to say goodbye.
The weather wasn’t cooperating with Cassandra’s vision of what the funeral would be like, the sky was much too clear to be considered mournful and even the snow sparkled delicately and defiantly against any morose feelings. This was a day to go sledding, have snow ball fights, sip cocoa by the fire, not a day to bury a pack mate.
No, thought Cass rebelliously, Carrie was a werewolf and fun while she lasted but she’d never been pack, not really. She’d been a pet, a project of interest, maybe even a friend when they weren’t competing (over Xander, who was Cassandra’s by right even if she had been dating Jack at the time andtheybothknewit), but she was never ever an equal.
She eyed Xander nervously as if he could’ve overheard those thoughts, then twitched her lip in derision. She was getting so submissive to him, catering her actions, her words, her thoughts to what would keep him happy. It was getting ridiculous and as soon as this whole Carrie thing blew over, she’d have to put him back in his place. She was alpha, for ch**st’s sake, and it wasn’t right.
She sighed and shivered for effect, getting into character, getting ready to play the role of the mourning friend. The whole pack would be here soon and if her performance, her feelings, weren’t exactly right, they’d smell it and then the whole trip would be one colossal waste of energy.
She’d called Carrie’s parents. Had left a message on the answering machine out of… she didn’t know. It was a gut feeling, something she would like someone else to do for her if she’d gotten shot in the ribs, bullet grazing her lung. If she’d died.
It was an idea she liked to play with, though it terrified her beyond reason. Maybe she liked to toy with the idea because it terrified her, something to prove just how unafraid she was. Xander still wasn’t talking to her beyond one syllable answers because she’d crawled into a coffin when they were out shopping for Carrie, and had waited there for him to find her. He’d ripped her out with this look of uninhibited rage, or maybe terror, in his eyes. He shook her and she hated him for that because hating him was easier than the alternative. It was easier than feeling like a complete jerk.

Randy shivered against the cold as he waited for Cat outside her house. With his dark hair more mussed than usual, haunted eyes and an increased abount of dark stubble on his chin, cheeks and throat he looked ten years older than before the new year. He knocked on her door again, more insistent.
"Come on, Kit-Cat," he murmered more to himself, his voice sounding hoarse. "Everyone's waiting..." He glanced back at Cain's car, loaded up with Cain himself, Rose riding shotgun and Jack and Eva in the backseat. Cat would have to sit on his lap if they wanted to get to the funeral in time.

Jack pressed his forehead against the window, huddling in on himself in a miserable self depreciating ball. It was his fault, an old bone but one he refused to relinquish, maybe not directly, but trace the line of fault back far enough and there he was. This was a mistake; bringing the whole troop to the funeral, his new pack. Cass would raise hell, especially at the sight of Cain. He could smell the blood already, or maybe that was Carrie’s. He couldn’t seem to wash the scent off of him.

Rose peered over her shoulder, pulling down the navy blue scarf from her mouth to clear her throat and speak. "Are you two alright back there...?" What a day for Cain's heater to be broken, she thought bitterly. She knew it wasn't the bitter cold that bothered her though. She hated funerals, always had. Especially since her breakdown at her father's funeral.

“If Randy would hurry the hell up. We’d be there already,” Cain grumbled. He was his usual grouchy ass mood, but today – considering the circumstances – he was even worse. He was dreading just being in the same building with Cassie, and to make matters worse upon that, the building was a funeral parlor. “Damn, I hate being late for anything.”

“Randy’s waiting on Cat.” Jack pointed out in a monotone; wishing, not for the first time, that Cain hadn't opted to come. He wasn’t going to be able to keep his mouth shut. It wasn’t in his genetic coding. And Jack couldn’t even talk to him about it ‘cause he’d just get all huffy and bitchy and say something anyways.

"Well, then, I'll correct myself - I wish Cat would hurry the hell up," Cain growled, propping his elbow upon the edge of the driver side window, to lay the side of his head in his palm with a heavy sigh. Cain was trying to tell himself - for once - to watch his temper, and keep himself in check. He was wishing he'd just stayed home, but he knew Rose would just guilt him about it later. But everything would be okay, if he could just hold his tongue in front of the Cassie and Xander.

Rose's hand reached out and touched Cain 's arm lightly. She kept her mouth shut and gave him a silent look of thanks for not starting something with Jack today.

“I’m sorry, alright?” Cass sighed, the silence killing her. She nestled against him, pressing her face against his neck. “I shouldn’t have gotten in the coffin and I’m sorry. I learned my lesson.”

"Huh?" Xander asked in a rather dazed voice. He'd been out of it all day, and was relishing staying that way until he finally had to fonally get out of the car and pull himself together for this thing. His eyes were red rimmed, from lack of sleep instead of crying, and a bit from the complete state of sobriety he'd been in for the past week or so. He looked at Cassie, slightly confused at the idea that she'd been speaking.
Cat finally blew out the door of the house she shared with a few girls from work, grabbing Randy on her way past and breezing the the car, knocking on the window before opening the car door and flashing a slight smile. "Sorry to keep you waiting, guys." She felt a bit bad about this whole thing, probably because everyone else was miserable. But only because of that, really.

Cass pushed away from him slightly, resisting the urge to lift up his eyelid to get a better look at his eye. “You out of it or mad?”

Cass frowned, pressing her hand against his cheek. “You want a hit?” She asked gently, tilting her head. “Just to clear your head.”

Xander shook his head. He did, but that was beside the point. "It wouldn't be right, Cass..."

“Cars wouldn’t hold it against you.” Cass touched his hair lightly just behind his ear. “I’m not saying to take enough to be flyin’, but Cars wouldn’t want you to be a zombie.”

"Maybe you should get out of my car." Xander said a little coolly, not even stopping to think about how much she couold make him regret saying that. "Or top giving me more to worry about."
