Nathan opened his mouth to shoot off a smart ass comment but one look from his mother silenced him.
“Nathan, please.” He flinched, heaving a despairing sigh before shuffling out of the room. He would have much preferred if she’d employed an angry tone instead of that small, tired one. He wouldn’t have felt quite so guilty.
Cass had to really work hard to not burst out in a sick sort of laughter after the kids filed out of the room, mostly because Nathan acted so much like she had when she was his age it was eerie. Her mother had told her countless times that she hoped Cass’ children behave just like she did. The poetical justice of Nathan’s behavior was mostly ruined, however, because Xander was the one who had to deal with it.
“How long has that been going on?”

Xander hrugged heavily, sitting down. "A.... well, a long time." he looked at her. "Cass...."

Cass turned her attention towards him, eyebrows slightly raised. Realizing sitting in the wheel chair made her look vaguely pathetic, she stood, transplanting herself to Xander’s lap.
“Yes, love?”

"I've missed you..." he buried his face in her shoulder, trying not to cry.

“I know, love. I’m sorry.” Cass hugged him, stroking his hair and feeling a twinge of guilt. “I missed you too.”

"I don't know how long I can do this..." Xander admitted

“Do what, Xander?” Cass put her hand under his chin, tilting his head up.

"Just keep goling..." Xander closed his eyes, ashamed to be giving her more problems than she already had.

“Xand…” Cass sighed. “The doctors think I can beat this. I think I can beat this. But that’s all a hollow victory if you don’t. You can’t walk around like I’m already dead, there are too many people counting on you to be optimistic.” She sighed again and leaned against him.
“And if I don’t, wouldn’t you rather enjoy the time we have left than waste it by moping around?”

Z"But I barely see you..." Xander sighed. "And I try, but the twins are going through a rebellious phase, and Kait tries to hold everything together, and... and I'm just a horrible father and I need you back, Cass." he whimpered the last few words, almost glad to finally be saying all of this

“Seeing me has nothing to do with it.” Cass said firmly. “You have an obligation to our children. You have an obligation to me . And you are not a horrible father because I say so and I’m always right.”

“I don’t care what our children have to say about anything.” Cass retorted, leveling a look that brooked no challenge.

“Not for lack of trying.” Cass sighed, wondering if she’s missed her opportunity for telling him the doctors said she could go home for the weekend.
