Kat shivered on the curb, clutching Scott’s jacket, something he’d neglected to take back before kicking her out of his car in the middle of the night, and puffing on a cigarette for warmth. Xander had been right to worry and she had been wrong to think that she could get away with lying to Scott. Well, maybe lying, maybe not. Finding her mother’s diaries had made a mess out of a lot of things, her heritage the least of which.
She fumbled with her cell phone, punching the digits with numb fingers. Calling her father’s house, where she was supposed to be warm in bed, was out of the question and so was her mother’s. The twins weren’t old enough to drive, but they could wake up Xander.
“…Hello?” Nathan growled, obviously annoyed at being woken up.
“Put Xander on the phone.” Kait instructed through chattering teeth. “Without waking up mom.”
“…Kait?” Worried, this time.
“The phone, Xander, without waking mom.” Kait snapped, coughing a little on the smoke.
“You’re smoking!” Nate exclaimed delightedly. “Mom’s gonna kill you!”
“Give Xander the phone.” Kait hissed with enough venom to send Nate scurrying downstairs.
“Dad,” Nate whispered at the foot of his parents’ bed, squirming uncomfortably with the phone in his hand. “Dad, I think Kait’s in trouble.”

"Hunh....?" Xander mumbled, rolling over in bed to look blearily at his son.

“Kait's on the phone. Wants to talk to you.” Nate whispered uneasily, glancing at his mom to make sure she was still asleep. “Something’s wrong.”

Xander got up carefully, stuffing his feet into slippers, holding his hand out to take the phone from Nathan

Nate handed over the phone, cast one final look at his mother, and shuffled to the door. “I’m going back to bed.”

Xander nodded and walked into the kitchen with the phone. "...Kait?"

“Da- Xand.” Kait blamed the almost slip up on her shivering, still clutching the jacket belligerently. “It’s f**k**g cold outside.”

"What're you doing outside?" Xander asked with a slight frown

“Snuck out.” Kait shrugged, coughing a little on her first puff of a new cigarette. “…Scott and I had a fight…”

"God..." Xander sighed, rubbing his eyes. "You snuck out and got in a car with him, with no way to get home of something went wrong?"

“Jet pack wouldn’t fit out the window.” Kait grinned, ashing her cigarette.

“I know.” Kait whimpered, stubbing out her cigarette on the curb. “I didn’t think he’d find out.”

"You can't keep things like that a secret, Kait." Xander sighed. "It doesn't work

“It’s not a secret.” Kait whispered, her breath fogging in the air. “I don’t know-“
Her voice broke and reluctantly she slid the jacket over her arms. “I don’t want to talk over the phone. Can you pick me up?”

"Of course." Xander said quietly. "Tell me where, and I'll be there."

Kait grinned a little, because that line sounded like it came out of a corny western song. “I’m in the shopping center across from the bar.”
And then quiter, "Thanks Xand, sorry I woke you up."

"I'll be there in a few minutes, Kait." Xander said, hanging up and rushing out to his truck.

“Okay.” Kait told the dead line before folding the phone and putting it back in her pocket, watching the road.

Xander sped up, jumping out of the truck with a blanket in his arms. "Kait..."
