Verica stared hard in the mirror, splashing water in her red eyes. Rod was gone. Gone for real this time.
Hunting had been bad lately. It was like the whole area was in a maelstrom from the the war. The wolf killing she and Frank had stumbled upon years ago was just the beginning of the nightmare. She hadn't told Rod at the time, letting frank and his father and his father's pack handled it. She wondered now if that would have changed things.
Rod had been gone a lot lately, hunting in the surrounding area. This time, she finally got word he wasn't coming back. Like her parents weren't coming back.
Things had been hard on Frank too, she supposed. She hadn't seen him around as much as she used to. He'd dropped out of school for his pack. She'd dropped to work nights at a gas station. She heard the wolf howls on her way home every night
She dried her face, studying her reflection again. her green eyes were too tired and aged for her sweet 18 year old face. She had dressed carefully, even putting makeup and tying back her long blond hair, streaked with a red so dark it looked black. She'd picked it, thinking it looked like blood.
When she was fine with the tight pants and low cut blouse she'd picked up she hopped on her motorbike, heading to Frank's place
