“Dad,” Gabe knocked quietly before entering the dressing room, the word still unfamiliar and pronounced with an awkward emphasis. He hadn’t been in the habit of calling his father anything until recently, even after Xander had proposed he had been referred to as ‘he’ or ‘him’ or not at all. “Mom lost her shoe.”
Being bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding, Gabe had been dubbed the unofficial messenger boy for the couple since they’d arrived at the church, spiriting messages between the two dressing rooms with as much grace as he could muster.

"Oookaaay..." Xander said blandly, trying with everything he could muster to tie his bowtie without cursing before finally giving up and turning towards his son. "Am I supposed to do something about this?"

“She insisted I make sure it wasn’t in here.” Gabe shrugged, fighting a smirk.
“I’ll go check in the car she rode in.” Jack shook his head, straightening his own tie in the mirror before glancing back at Xander. “You missing anything? Got both shoes on?”

"I think I'd notice if I was missing a shoe." Xander rolled his eyes.

“Just making sure.” Jack chuckled as he closed the door behind him.
Gabe looked his father over, one eyebrow slightly raised. “You want me to get someone to help you with your tie?”

"I can get it..." Xander muttered, turning back to the mirror to fuss with his tie again. "I got it once, I can do it again."

“It’d be faster if you let someone help you.” Gabe pointed out, sitting down in one of the chairs lined up against the wall. “Eva did mine.”
“Are you nervous?”

"No." Xander said seriously. "And there's plety of time. What's there to be nervous about?"

“Dunno.” The slip in grammar another small sign of trust. Gabe shrugged idly, swinging his legs. “There’re a lot of people out there. Are your parents coming?”

"Hell if I know." Xander shrugged, relishing in the moments of honesty with his son. "Tell me, how is are your parents to predict?"

“I talk to my parents.” Gabe shook his head, rejecting Xander’s point. “Why don’t you get along?”

“About what?” Gabe asked, undeterred by Xander’s obvious dislike of the topic.

"About me being an idiot." Xander said flatly, not pausing in his bow tie tying.

"You're doing it wrong." Gabe pointed out, doing nothing to disguise the amused grin he was wearing. “And how’re you an idiot?”

"I'm an idiot because I'm doing it wrong." Xander said with a grin, pulling his feeble knot apart to try again. "And of course I'm doing it wrong; if I was right then it's be done by now."

“If you’d let someone help you could be done faster.” Gabe stifled a laugh. “And then you could help look for mom’s shoe.”

“That’s stupid.” Gabe frowned, standing up on the chair. “No, that piece goes underneath. Look, just come here, I’ll show you.”
