Mad nodded, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand.

Carrie helped her wipe away her drying tears and kissed her forehead. "You wanna come and finish watching the movie with Mommy, sweetness? We can make some popcorn if you want."

“No,” Maddie whined. “Daddy’s talking to Sally so she won’t be sad.”
“I’m done talking to him, it’s a waste of time.” Cass crossed her arms. “I’m not sad, I’m pissed.”
Maddie looked at her father earnestly. “Sally’s pissed.”
“Don’t tell him I told you that!”

Carrie blinked. 'Hmm...Maybe I shouldn't let her watch so much of that MTV reality show crap...'

"Carrie, you don't want to be in here right now..." Xander said finally

“Oh, real f**k**g smart, Xander.” Cass rolled her eyes. “That won’t raise more questions. Why don’t you just go ahead and tell her you’re talking to me? That’d go over well.”
“Real f**k**g smart.” Maddie parroted.

"Don't cuss." Xander said, not looking at Maddie to make it clear who he was talking to

“I’ll say whatever the f**k I want.” Cass snapped, shooting a warning glance in Maddie’s direction. “Close your mouth or I’m leaving.”
Mad stared, slack jawed, before quickly pursing her lips together.
“Daddy?” Maddie recovered quickly, squirming to be let down. “I’m tired. Will you read me a story?”

"Of course, darling." Xander said obligingly. "What story tonight?"

"About Sally." Maddie answered, reaching out for him.

“I was a flower and you were my gardener. You watered me and fed me. You wrapped me in warm blankets when the frost threatened my petals.” Maddie moved towards Xander before turning back to stare at her mother, as Cass was doing. “But a weed grew near me that you would not pull up because you were sentimental. It’s roots choked me; stealing my water, my food, my love. It’s leaves grew and blocked my sun, the sight of you. But still you cared for us equally, this weed and I, all the time swearing you loved me more, that you cared for the weed only because no one else did. And when I fell, starved from your nutriment and affection, you continued to water the weed.”

"You've.... had a long time to think that metaphor through..." Xander said a bit uncomfortably- this wasn't quite what he was used to hearing from Cassie

((skippage, let’s say aboot 30 minutes…)
Jack knocked at their front door, a holey shirt thrown over pajama bottoms, his hair disheveled and red marks still marring his cheek from the pillow. He shifted his weight from foot to foot, going over what he was going to say.
‘Hey, Xand, remember seven years ago when you said you’d do anything to have Cass back? Well, tonight’s your lucky night.’ He shook his head. That would probably get the door slammed in his face.
‘So, ever wonder why Cass never had a funeral?’ No. That wouldn’t do either. His train of thought was completely derailed before he could come up with something better as someone opened the door.

Xander sighed when he openned the door. He wasn't sure who he expected, but his former best friend, the one he rarely talked to these days, surely wasn't it. "What is it, Jack...?" he asked, not bothering to cover his tiredess

“Hey, listen,” Jack grinned, bit his lip, frowned. “I know it’s late, but this is kind of important, it’s really important. It can’t wait till tomorrow. Well, actually…” He shook his head and closed his mouth, effectively stopping the flow of words.
“No, it can’t wait. I have to show you something… someone. I need to show you someone.” He frowned again. “Two someones, really.”
