“Downstairs.” Nate turned tail and fled the way he came, almost knocking his father and sister over. He kneeled over, hands on knees, panting with fear and exertion. “Not upstairs.” He forced himself to breath, to not freak out or start hyperventilating or something. After a few moments, he straightened, shooting an accusatory glare in Xander’s direction.
“Her room’s empty.”

Xander's eyes widened momentarily and he turned to the woman at the front desk. "Excuse me..." he ran a hand back through his hair nervously. "Do you know where the woman in room 216 went? He room's empty..."

“Let me call you back.” The young woman turned around with a sigh, closing her cell phone. She was young, pretty, and blonde. Probably a doctor’s daughter getting volunteer hours for college. “216?” She typed a few strokes on the keyboard. “Cassandra Dean? She’s..”
“Right here.” Cassie finished for the girl as she was wheeled forward by a male nurse. “They switched my rooms, I thought they called you.”

"Cass!" Xander shouted, rushing over to the wheelchair and falling on her knees to hug her. "Cassie, there you are!"

Cass grinned, kissing his cheek and ruffing up his hair a bit to let him know she thought he was being silly. “Well, I’m not at the beach.” She paused a moment, wrinkling her nose. “Thank God.”
She gave each member of her family an appraising look before nodding at the nurse, dismissing him. “You look tired. Have you been sleeping alright?” She was addressing them all, but looking at Xander, expecting him to answer for all of them.

"We've been doing our best." Xander said with a gentle smile. "What about you?"

“There’s not much to do around here but sleep.” Cass smiled a little wistfully. It was slightly frustrating how Xander insisted on talking to her like she might have another seizure at any moment, but she was too glad to see them all to complain. Nate, having regained most of his composure, stepped forward.
“Here, Mom.” He held forward the flowers and flashed a grin at his brother as she took them.
“Thank you, honey, they’re pretty.” She tapped Xander lightly on the arm. “Let’s go put them in my new room.”

"They're from both of us." James said quietly, not wanting his brother to take all of the credit.
Xander nodded slightly, positioning himself behind the wheelchair. "You're... looking much better, honey...."

“Well, thank you too.” Cass stifled a grin and brushed his arm as she was pushed past him. Nate made a face at his brother as soon as both of their parents were looking the other way. Kait was content to walk at the back of the group and listen to her mom talk, not bothering to vie for attention.
“They put me on a different medication. New meds for a new room.” She grinned, teasing. “They don’t make me as tired.”

“Don’t get too excited,” Cass teased, turning towards him slightly. “I still can’t operate heavy machinery, but I figured I’d let you drive.”

"Ah, I'm sick of driving." Xander shook his head. "Kait can chauffer us around, I think."

“Dad washed my permit.” Kait interjected. Sometime during their visit she’d have to find the doctor that’d given her mom the new meds and thank him. Cass grinned, laughing as she lightly smacked Xander’s arm.
“There you have it. You’re stuck driving.” She grinned triumphantly, pointing out her room as they got closer.

"Well, then." Xander sighed, opening the door and wheeling Cass inside. "I suppose I'm washing the keys next, and we're never going out driving again."

“I’ll make you dig around in the garage for the bikes.” Cass teased, turning the wheel chair around in a slow awkward circle to face them. A look passed between her and Kait, and Kait nodded, smiling a little sadly about being asked to leave already.
“Have you eaten,” Kait waited till her mother shook her head before looking at her brother’s and tilting her head towards that door. “We’ll go get you breakfast.”
“Like hell we will.” Nate grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest. “It doesn’t take three people to go get a tray of food.” Cassandra raised her eyebrows at this, but said nothing, electing to wait to see how Xander would handle it.

"No." xander said quietly. "But who says your mother will stop after one tray? Besides, you two havn't eaten yet, have you?"

“Why?” Nathan stuck his chin out belligerently, not moving from the spot. His dad was only doing this because he was trying to impress his mom.
