Nathan shrugged, selecting a cd and covering it with his hand but too late.
“Nate.” Kait reprimanded in a low tone, warning. “Don’t.” But it was promptly ignored. A Justin Timberlake was shoved into the player and Nate was not so successfully hiding a triumphant smirk. A little old school, but ‘I’m bringing sexy back’ was a classic.

Xander clenched his teeth, but managed to keep his face blank and not say anything about the music. He figured if he kept this up, he could block out all of words entirely; as it was, he was only catching one or two every line.

Nate turned the volume up, singing along loudly and obnoxiously. It was his chosen form of protest, letting everyone else know exactly how dissatisfied he was with the whole situation. Kait clammed up, James played the apathy card, and he was morbidly cheerful. He’d go out of his way to point out the little things that reminded everyone of who wasn’t there. As if they needed reminding.
“Hey James!” He yelled over the music, not bothering to turn it down. “What was that one song? You know: ‘Turning on the charm long enough to get you by’. We have that cd?” Oh, he could keep this up all day long.

"I broke that CD." James said flatly, somehow hearable even without raising his voice. He may still have loved his twin, but Nathan even managed to get on his nerves sometimes.

“Mom’s gonna be pissed.” He laughed, then sobered quickly. Sometimes, not very often, but sometimes his snide remarks backfired. “She liked that cd.” This was said quietly and he turned off the music, dejected.
“Likes.” Kait corrected tonelessly. “She still likes the cd.”

"We can buy her another copy...." Xander said softly, feeling all but forgotten about. "When she gets better...."

“If she gets better.” Nate muttered darkly. Kait didn’t have the energy to reprimand him.

"She's going to get better!" Xander snapped, suddenly losing his temper. "She's going to get better because she's strong, and she has us, and don't you ever, EVER doubt it!"

“Yeah, right!” Nate challenged, used to getting his way for over a month now. “If she’s gonna get better, why’s everyone moping around like she’s dead already? You’re just saying that ‘cause you need her to get better. You can’t even get up in the morning by yourself when she isn’t around.”

"I love her..." xander's voice returned to the soft tone hed been using since cass had started staying in the hospital. He stopped the truck, already in the parking lot, and looked over at Nathan. "So what if I need her around?"

“Because it’s stupid.” Nate undid his seat belt in a hurry, not looking at his father. “You’re all a bunch of hypocrites and I bet you my flower money she sees right through it.” He slammed the door and headed towards the hospital without waiting for the others. Kait bit at the inside of her cheek, a little trick she learned to help her stop from crying.

James jumped mindlessly out as well, following his brother with his hands shoved into his pockets, silent.
Xander pulled the keys out, resting his head on the steering wheel for a moment before lamming his hand into it. He suddenly seemed to realize that someone else was in the car, and he looked in the mirror at Kait. "We should get going before they cause too much trouble..." getting out, he opened the door for her, holding his hand out to help her.

“Can you believe him?” Nate slowed till his brother caught up to him. “He acts like she’s already six feet under and he tells me she’s gonna get better. Does he think I’m six? I’m not f**king stupid.” He ignored the dirty look he was getting from a nurse and made a bee line for the gift shop.
Kait gave Xander a skeptical look. “Them? Trouble? Naw.” She said softly, almost afraid of her voice betraying her but she did manage a very small smile. She took his hand and slipped to the ground before hugging him. Whether for his or her own comfort, she wasn’t sure.

Xander hugged her tightly. "She's gotta get better...."
James shrugged listlessly. "He's the one who acts like he's 6..."

“She will.” Kait said with a confidence she didn’t feel. She’d be strong for him, though his doubt shook her to the core.
Nate grinned in response, a curling of lip and showing of teeth, not a friendly expression. After browsing a few moments, he picked the least pathetic looking bouquet and dropped a wad of cash on the counter before darting towards the elevator. It was one of the little games he played; see who can get to mom’s room first.

James sighed, sounding like the old man he sometimes felt like. Like hell he was running anywhere. Instead, he picked up his pace slightly, taking a short cut that he knew about.
Taking Kait's arm gently, Xander walked into the hospital, wincing slightly at the smell

Nathan grinned, turning away from the elevator as soon as his twin was out of sight, then, glancing right and left, ran full speed towards and up the stairs, only coming to a screeching halt when he reached his mother’s room. He grinned, doing a mini victory dance before stopping cold, a look of panic crossing his face.
Kait wrinkled her nose, trying to breathe as little as possible of the air. She let Xander lead her along at his own pace. “Think she’ll be awake?”

"Maybe." Xander said a little too hopefully. "We'll stay as long as she's feeling up to seeing us."
"What, not going in to brag to her about being here first?" James said flatly, coming down the hallway

“Unless the doctor kicks us out again.” Kait sighed, the last time they’d been there practically all day.
Nate glanced at his brother, his mouth working to form words his brain couldn’t quite put together. He glanced back into the room and shook his head, looking like a trapped animal.
“She’s not there.” He turned his head but his eyes stayed glued on the empty bed, freshly made. Even the vase and picture frames she kept on the table by her bed were gone.

"What?" James snapped, looking up and down the hall for a doctor or nurse, anyone he could confront about this.
