“If we don’t, someone else will.” Cass put a hand on his chest. “If you don’t want to do this now, I can tell her to come back later. Or not at all.”

"Who will, Cass?" Xander asked. "No one else KNEW."

“Jack does.” Cass pointed out quietly.

"You think he'd tell her?" Xander frowned at her

“If she fed him the same spiel she gave me.” Cass shrugged. “It depends.”

Zoey shifted on the couch again, her awkward, uncomfortable feeling growing steadily worse.

Xander sighed, deciding he'd figure things out as he went along. Fixing a smile on his face, he strode into the living room. "You must be Zoey, right?"

Zoey looked over to Xander. At first glance you'd never even guess she and Carrie were related, mostly due to her new hair color and much more petite stature. But when she shot Xander a grin as she stood up to shake his hand the resemblance was startling. The sisters shared the same wide mouth and bright, color-shifting hazel eyes.
"Yeah, I'm Zoey. Nice to meet you, Mr. Dean."

"Xander." he said a little uncomfortably, both at the name and the handshake. Handshakes seemed much too businesslike for something this personal and cutting. "I'm not Mr. anybody."

Cass followed after him, a little lost and feeling left out but glad the pressure wasn’t on her anymore. "Can I get you anything to drink?"

Zoey shook her head. "No thank you, ma'am." She sat back down, smiling up at Xander. "Xander...Carrie talked about you a lot in her diary."

Xander laughed softly. "Well, all the good things were true, and all the bad stuff was made up." he stood, uncomfortably, trying to act casual.

Cass lightly touched the back of Xander’s arm, nodding towards the armchair. “You want anything, sugar?”

Carrie laughed softly, shaking her head. "Well, she actually spoke really well of all her friends, especially you, Mrs. Dean."

“Me?” Cass squeaked, ruining any facade of dignity she’d been trying to cultivate. She hadn’t been particularly nice to the girl until right before the move to Texas and even considering that, Carrie couldn’t have liked her very much after she and Xander started dating.

Zoey nodded. "Yeah, you were her only real girl friend. She wrote that she could talk to you about things she couldn't even mention to the guys." Her tone softening, she added, "You guys were her family."

"I'll have a beer." Xander said quietly, giving Cassie an excuse to retreat to get her composure back.

“Pack.” Cass corrected without thought, then froze, realizing her error. “Beer, sure.” She rushed into the kitchen before Zoey could call her on it.

"Pack...?" Zoey blinked then quickly smiled. "That might explain some of the little doodles in Carrie's diary. Something about 'Wulf Truth'. Were you all as crazy about wolves as my sister? I found a lot of wolf stuff packed up in the attic. Stuffed animals, photographs, some sketchings..."

Cass got the beer, and one for herself, before returning silently. Just as silently, she slipped the beer into Xander’s hand before finding a seat on the far edge of the couch.
“Wolves were… the ‘in thing’, I suppose.” She gave Xander a small, knowing smile.
