'You can do this, they were her best friends after all.' Zoey gulped and raked her fingers through her straight, dyed newly blond hair. She drew in a slow, deep breath as she climbed out of the shiny new purple pick-up truck her fatgher had bought her for her eighteenth birthday just a month ago.
A blast of January air hit her square in the face and she shuddered, hugging her denim jacket tighter around herself. She should've dressed warmer, she knew. It got a lot colder in Virginia than in Texas. Zoey quickly pulled her scarf, decorated in various shades of blue in horizontal stripes, over her mouth and nose and pulled up the collar on her jacket.
Hurrying through an freshly shoveled walkway, she made it to thr front door of the house she'd been parked outside of for at least ten minutes. She closed her brown eyes breifly, drawing in an icy breath of air through her scarf. 'Now or never." Pulling her scarf back around her neck, Zoey raised her hand, encased and warm in a form-fitted black leather glove lined with faux fur, and knocked three times on the door with a mailbox marked with the last name 'Dean'.

Cass sighed, looking up from the cartoon she was watching with Bri. She didn’t remember inviting anyone to stop by, but maybe it was someone looking for the twins.
“Stay here, sugar.” Cass kissed the top of her daughter’s head as she stood before making her way to the door. She glanced through the window, and chuckled. Xander’s nervousness about strangers had rubbed off on her but not to the point where she was too afraid to open the door for a girl. She did look a little old for the twins, maybe she was one of Kait’s friends.
“Can I help you?”

Zoey blinked up at Cass, hugging her jacket closer around her petite frame. "Hi, um, I'm looking for Xander and Cassandra Dean. Would you happen to be Mrs. Dean, ma'am?" She cleared her throat, knowing that her normally squeaky voice must've sounded slightly hoarse because of the cold.

Cass looked the girl over, realizing she should probably invite her in out of the cold, but something in the back of her head was nagging at her, telling her to be suspicious.
“I am.”

Zoey's wide mouth morphed into grin, holding out her hand. "It's great to finally meet you, Mrs. Dean. I'm Zoey Bennett."

Cassandra stiffened, and had to give herself credit for not slamming the door immediately. She didn’t return the smile, didn’t shake her hand. Didn’t shake Carrie’s little sister’s hand. God, she was young enough to be Carrie’s kid.
“What do you want?”

Zoey slowly lowered her hand, biting her lip and shifting from one foot to another in a very Carrie-like manner. "I...I wanted to find out about my sister. I never knew her, which you probably know, and Mom and Dad refuse to tell me anything. Whenever I'd bring her up, Mom'd get all teary-eyed and run out of the room and Dad would go for a jog."
"I read in her diary that you, Mr. Dean and Jack Lupus were her best friends, so I figured you'd be the ones to come see to find out about Carrie."

“Her parents…” Cass looked her over again, taking note the hair wasn’t natural, she could smell the dye. Instinct told her not to open old wounds, to close the door and let sleeping dogs lie but Xander would be mad if she wasn’t nice. She opened the door wider, stepping aside. “You should come inside.”

Zoey's smile returned. "Thank you, Mrs. Dean." She stepped inside, taking the time to scrape her boots against the doormat to get off excess snow. She kept her jacket and scarf on but shook a few stray snowflakes from her hair.
Bri wandered out of the living room tilting her head curiously at Zoey before shooting her a wide grin, proudly showing off her missing two front teeth. "Hi. I'm Bri."
The older girl blinked and smiled, kneeling in front of the four year old. "Nice to meet ya, Bri. I'm Zoey."

“Go upstairs with Kait.” Cass sighed as she closed the door, wishing the girl had stayed put. “We can talk in the living room.”

Bri pouted slightly but nodded, giving Zoey a cute wave before she hurried up the stairs. "Kaity! Mommy has a friend over!"
Zoey stood up, giving Cass a shy smile. "She's a beautiful little girl."

“She takes after her father,” Cass let a small smile slip before heading towards the living room. “So…”
“Have a seat.” She paused, rubbing at her arm before sitting down on the couch. “I think you should tell me exactly what you know about Carrie. About what she was.”
Kait looked up from her computer, cocking an eyebrow. “Who is it?”

Zoey cautiously sat down near Cass. "What she was...? Well, I only know about Carrie from her tenth birthday to when she left Texas. I know she was bi and was dating a girl named Sandy for about six months before dating Mr. Dean. Um...she loved musicals, she kept a roadkill collection under her bed which, I've happily yet to find or smell. She liked to make her own clothes, she was always fighting with mom and dad...that's the basic jist of what I know about my big sister."
Bri shrugged. "I dunno. She said her name was...Zoey."

“So,” Cass rubbed at her eyes. “Sounds like you know the basics. What do you need me to tell you?”
“Never heard of her.” Kait shrugged, considering calling Xander. “Did mom look okay?”

Zoey shrugged slightly then looked up at Cass with ernest brown eyes. "What was she like? What made her laugh? What were her favorite movies? Little things a kid sister should know."
Bri thought for a moment. "She looked a little frizzled." She of course meant frazzled, but she'd been watching The Magic School Bus when Zoey had knocked on the door.

Cass turned her head, refusing to look at the girl. “She was… Carrie. Jack made her laugh, they were… they were on the same wave length. She liked those musical things, you know, that rocky show? She… she was fun.” Cass finished lamely, still not sure what she was supposed to say.
“Alright, go ahead and put your channel on.” Kait picked up the phone and dialed Xander’s work number.

"Hello?" Xander picked up the phone almost immediatly, trying to get the truck's window rolled up, the music turned down, hold the phone and drive. It was probab;y a rather funny dance that seemed to happen every time someone from the family called.

“Hey, Xand.” Kait was typing and talking at the same time, causing her to talk slower than normal. “Do you know anyone named Zoey? One of mom’s friends maybe?”

"No." Xander said finally, his music lowered to a dull roar. "No, I don't think I've ever met anyone named that. Why?"

“ ‘Cause Bri just got sent upstairs.” Kait pushed away from the desk slightly. “Said some chick showed up at the front door and mom looked, I don’t know, upset, I guess.”
