Ooc; I just started typing… this was going to be a fic, but I thought – wait… this would be a cute role-play.
Cain had been excited about his second grade Christmas party for three weeks, ever since he’d come home waving a bright red piece of paper in front of Abel’s face.
“Look, Pop! We’re havin’ a party! You know, with food and stuff. We get to have the party with Mrs. Winter’s class too, can you believe it. I’ll get to see Rose all day! And Mrs. Miller even said we get to see a real reindeer. Can you believe it! A real reindeer, Dad!” The next moment the three foot three boy was off to find his mother, running as fast as he could.
“Mom! Mom! I need your--” He stopped mid-sentence as he slid into the kitchen on sock feet to find his mother cropping up something leafy and green.
“Yes, Cainy, what?” She was glancing over her glasses; she only wore them sometimes, mostly when her head hurt.
“I need your help.”
“You need my help with what, because if your father told you no about the mountain climbing classes again, the answer’s still the same from me.”
“NO, mother, that’s not it.” Cain’s eyes lit up with the next bit of news. “I gotta get Rose somethin’ for Christmas! I need your help pickin’ her somethin’.” He’d only recently figured out that Rose was a girl like all the other girls in school. Only he counted her special, she didn’t bug him and gross him out like all the other little girls did.
Three weeks later Cain’s face was full of joy. He’d been counting down the days. After eating cake and getting icing all over the sleeve of his shirt, Cain practically ran to his cubby to get Rose’s gift. He hadn’t seen her yet, he hoped she hadn’t gotten sick again. It wasn’t as much fun at school if your Best Friend wasn’t there.
When Cain finally found her with all the other girls (the boys and girls tended to separate) he grinned from ear to ear.
“Rose,” he stopped talking a moment, every little girl in the ‘group’ had turned to look at him. He smiled and then turned his attention back to his friend. “I got you something, you know, for Christmas.”
He’d shoved the little bear wearing a Christmas-ie bow behind his back until now. Cam had picked the bear, then called Evan to make sure Cain was right about Rose’s ears being pierced. The bear was holding a little green box with a white bow and ribbon. It held a pair of diamond earrings set in gold. Abel had fussed to no end about how silly Cain was being, but his son refused to back down from the gift.
Cain’s smile had grown. “I hope you like them.” He held the bear toward Rose; he was sort of a goofy kid. “Took me a long time to tell dad why I needed them. The man just don’t understand Best Friends.”

The party had barely started when the teacher cleared her throat, having an announcement to make. "I know this is... well, a strange day for this, but we have a new student today!"
Standing next to her was a blond girl so short and fragile looking it was hard to believe she was old enough for second grade. Her blond hair barely reached past her ears and poofed out almost comically, matching her oversized deep blue eyes. She looked around the classroom, seeming almost lost.

Cain was no exception to the rule; his head had turned just like everyone else’s had. He wondered if this was like when that girl had Maine had moved in down the street from him and if this girl would talk funny too. He really hated the way that other girl talked… plus, she made fun of the way Cain talked. That just made him mad.
Cain had a thing about being first in line for everything, he’d been the first person besides Cam to hold his little sister Tala when they’d gotten her from the court house, he’d been the first one at Thanksgiving to stand up in his chair, give thanks, pray, and then eat, and he wanted to be the first one to welcome this new kid to class.
“C’mon, Rose, let’s go check it out,” he grabbed Rose’s hand, pulling her ( and her bear ) with him toward the front of the class room.
“Hey!” His mood dropped slightly when he saw she was a girl. She probably talked funny too. “I’m Cain,” he stuck his hand not connected to Rose’s out for a shake. “Nice to meet you.”

"Um..." she took his hand gently to shake it. "Hi... I'm Evlyn." she still looked lost and more than a little nervous.

Rose grinned at the new girl. "Hi! I'm Rosie." She tilted her head cutely, her blond pigtails flopping to one side. “Evielyn?” Rose frowned slightly, having trouble pronouncing her name. She quickly brightened up. “I’ll call you Evie!” She turned to Cain grinning wider. Her blue eyes were sparkling with her new bear clutched to her chest. “Cainy, I love it! Thank you so much! I’ll ask Mrs. Miller to help me put my new earrings in during lunch, nn’kay?” She lowered her eyes slightly. “But…this kinda makes what I made you look kinda dumb.”
She dug around in the front pocket of her overalls, which were decorated with little embroidered reindeers and modestly held out a carefully hand-woven friendship bracelet. By its clumsy design it was evident she’d made it herself. She’d even been careful to use Cain’s favorite colors.
“I worked on it for a week. I really hope you like it. Daddy’s had to treat a lot of animals for free lately cause people can’t pay him right away, so we didn’t have much money for Christmas presents this year.”

Cain had always been a smiler, but he smiled more when Rose held out the bracelet. “Thanks, Rose,” he took and slipped his on his wrist, tightening it up so it wouldn’t fall off again. “I really like it. I’ll wear it forever, ‘kay?”
He hugged Rose, kissing was just out of the question for boys in his mind, because everyone knew girls had cooties. Even in first and second grade.
“Besides, this is way cooler then my gift. Maybe my dad should help animals.”

Rose grinned. "You really like it? Yay!" She hugged him tightly. "Just for that, I don't have to give you your other present if you didn't like the one I made you."

Cain made some little noise. “Rosie, you’re squishing me,” he muttered, hoping none of the other boys were seeing this. It was embarrassing. “You thought it wouldn’t like it?”
The teacher popped back out about then. “Okay, listen, settle down everyone. The man from the zoo just came! The Reindeer is here!”
“Oh, c’mon Rose – Evlyn, we’ve got to see the Reindeer!” He began to pull Rose toward the classroom doors. “Oh, this is so exciting. I’ve never seen a Reindeer before. I wonder if it can fly!”

Rose made a squealing sound that was more fitted for a chipmunk than a girl. "Woo-hoo!" She grabbed Evlyn's hand as Cain tugged her away. "C'mon, Evie! We get to see Dasher!"

“Okay, everyone!” The teacher was trying to talk over the hustle and bustle of little kids. “Now the principal has allowed the reindeer to be brought in the gym, that way we don’t have to go out doors. I need everyone to stay near the front of the deer when you see it, okay?”
All the little kids shook their heads. “Okay, thank you. Now, let’s go see the reindeer!”
“Rose, you know, if it has a red nose I bet it’s Rudolph,” Cain said as they all poured into the gym. As soon as he heard the bells he was rushing toward the sound, dragging the two girls behind him.
“Okay, Rose, you were right. It has a black nose, it’s Dasher.” He said, standing in awe at the sight of a reindeer. “It’s a lot bigger then I thought it’d be,” he added, now smiling as he reached a hand up to touch it before patting as high on it’s neck as he could reach. The reindeer huffed and blew hot air right on Cain’s neck as it turned its head to see what was happening. “Oh man, I want one of these.” He said, excited beyond belief.

Rose's eye sparkled as she stared up at the reindeer. "He's so cute!" She squealed, reaching up to stroke the animal's warm nose.

At the second pat from Rose the reindeer sneezed, throwing snot two feet in front of it, a little landed on Rose’s hand.
“Ew, Rose,” Cain said making a face and pointing at the reindeer, “I think Dasher is allergic to you.” Then he started laughing after he realized it had actually gotten snot on her. “That’s so gross; Rose has Reindeer Boogies on her!” He was pointing at Rose and holding onto the reindeer so he wouldn’t fall down. When he stopped laughing, he took Rose’s hand and wiped it on his blue jean leg.
“That’s what Dad does,” he said smiling, “and Dad knows everything, so I think blue jeans must be made for snot.”

"Thanks, Cainy." Rose hadn't squealed or jumped back when the reindeer sneezed like most of the other girls. she seemed facinated and grossed out at the same time. "Dasher snot is gross."

"Yeah, but Emily’s trying to kiss me last week was grosser,” Cain commented, reaching up to jingle a bell on the side of the animal’s halter. “Dasher snot may be gross, but he sure does have cool bells. I bet the coolness of his bells make up for the grossness of his snot. This is the best Christmas party I’ve ever been too, most of the ones I go to have old people in red and gross eggnog.”

Karma stood in the back trying to look over everyone to get a glimpse of the reindeer without having to get to close to it. "I hate being short.." She sighed and finally gave up. Reindeer freaked her out. She was afraid to get close to them because of the chance of it grabbing hold of her shirt and flying away with her. "Crazy deers...." She frowned and stood there like a knot on a log.

“C’mon, Rose,” Cain grabbed his friend’s sleeve. “Let’s get play a game or somethin’…” He spotted Karma a moment later. “Hey look! We can ask Karma is she wants to go with us. And Eva too.” He waved toward Karma, all the while slowly pulling Rose through the crowd of little kids waiting to see the reindeer. “Hey! Karma you wanna go play a game with us? I think the teacher said we can play musical chairs!”

Jack stood off to the side, staring at the reindeer. They’d never let a reindeer in his school back in Texas. It must be too hot for it to survive, Jack finally decided. Cassie would be so jealous when he told her. Maybe then she’d bug her daddy to take her to the zoo and she’d make him take Jack along, too. He wrinkled his nose slightly. His grandma had promised to take him to the zoo once. She was the one they were visiting, the reason why his mom had dragged him out of school and up to this hick town. She was sick, but she was always sick so Jack didn’t know why this time constituted a special visit. He cast a sidelong glance at a group of kids, wishing Cass was here so he wouldn’t be so alone.

"Hi..." Eva had noticed Jack and walked over to him. "It's kinda scary, isn't it...?" She nodded at the reindeer.
"Are you new here?"

“Hi.” Jack blinked, looking the girl over. “I dunno about scary… I kinda thought a reindeer’d be bigger ‘en that.”
“Nah, my grandma lives here, but this is the first time I’ve been to this school.”

Rose grabbed Eva's arm then grabbed Jack with her free hand. "C'mon, slow pokes! Lets play!" She tugged them off.
