Cassandra is exhausted, more from the constant attention than from the actual birth, but Xander is there, hovering constantly ever since the doctor let him in to see her, and that’s no small comfort. Jack’s curled up in a chair in the corner dead asleep with a little pink candy cigar drooping from the corner of his mouth and all she can do for a good three and a half minutes is just laugh at him, wishing they had film left on the camera.
Xander looks at her with this worried expression on his face like maybe the strain from the birth pushed her over the deep end and that just makes her laugh harder even though she feels bad for it. She can’t really blame him for worrying, even the doctors didn’t think she’d make it, too much lost blood or something, but how could she even think of dying when something so small, so helpless, so perfect was counting on her to live?
She controls herself, content to just smile down at the tiny pink bundle in her arms and wonder how she could have so much love for something so small.
“Cass…?” Xand reaches for her, like she might fall over dead any second, with this ridiculously anxious look on his face and that starts Cassie laughing all over again. But tiny Kaitlyn is having none of it this time, and she wakes up with this incredibly loud wailing noise and all Cass can do is giggle and wonder how something so small can have so much lung power and how the hell Jack is still sleeping through all the noise.
“Xand- just hold her for a sec,” She adjust the blanket, ready to hand Kait over but stops cold, catching the deer in headlights look Xander is shooting in her direction, and it’s doing absolutely nothing to help her stop laughing.
“Xander,” Cass laughs, hefting up the screaming bundle. “You’re not gonna break her.”
Xander doesn’t look so sure but he takes the girl and she stops crying as soon as she’s settled in his arms. Xand blinks, looking down at her then looking back at Cass with this proud little smile on his lips and Cass knows right then and there that they’re all going to be just fine.
