Yup, wrote this in about half and hour. ^^ I love it though, Evan is slowly becoming one of my favrite characters.
***
He watched her sweep across the dance floor with him. She was giggling at something he'd said, her sky blue eyes, Anna's eyes, sparkling in the dim lights. Her dress, a simple, sleeveless cotton dress that reached her ankles and was the color of fresh snow. Her long blond hair was loose over her shoulders in loose curls. She'd done her hair herself. The only make-up she was wearing was a little mascara and pale pink lip gloss.
He thought she couldn't have looked more beautiful.
~*~Look at the two of you dancing that way
Lost in the moment and each other's face
So much in love you're alone in this place
Like there’s nobody else in the world~*~
Evan's brown eyes swept the dance floor as his only daughter and her best friend swept into the crowd, Rose's high laughter almost drowning out the music. He could still rememeber not to long ago when she'd looked up to him, literally and figurativly, those big blue eyes so loving and sweet. Now she was growing up, her first prom with Cain. It was, in actuallity, Cain's junior prom for which he hadn't had a date and hed known Rose had been dying to go.
~*~I was enough for her not long ago
I was her number one
She told me so
and she still means the world to me
Just so you know
So be careful when you hold my girl
Time changes everything
Life must go on
and I’m not gonna stand in your way~*~
A soft smile crossed Evan's face, his mind drifitng away from chaperoning the prom to the bittersweet day Rose was born. The day he'd lost his wife, but gained his beloved little girl.
He alway kept a mental image in his mind of the day in the hospital room. Before Anna started to get sick, before she slipped away from them. Evan had been the first one to hold her when she was born. He could still remember how small and frail she'd looked wrapped in that soft pink blanket.
~*~I loved her first. I held her first
and a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
and I prayed that she'd find you someday
but it's still hard to give her away
I loved her first~*~
Evan stood on his toes, peeking over the heads of the other prom attendents. He spotted a familar head of blond hair near the DJ and half-grinned. How or why the school had gotten Randy Armstice to do the music, he had no idea. But Randy did have good and extending tastes in music, so it could be forgiven.
Rose was talking to him, pushing her long blond hair out of her face as she spoke. He couldn't hear what she was saying though. Cain was next to her, not really listening. He was talking toWill's boy, Jack, most likely complaining about the music.
Sometimes Evan still had trouble believing how fast his little Rosie was growing up. He still sometimes found himself thinking of her as the little freckled nine year old he used to tuck into bed to read the fairy tales she'd always disliked, saying the she didn't understand them. "Why do the princes always have to be handsome? Do people just say he's handsome becuase he's a prince? And what about those dumb princesses that're 'beautiful as the day is long'? What kind of day? Winter days are really short, ya know, Daddy."
She'd always called him 'daddy'. From her first word, that's all she'd ever called him. Never dad, or 'pa' as some of the other children refered to their fathers. Always 'Daddy'.
~*~How could that beautiful woman with you
Be the same freckle faced kid that I knew
The one that I read all those fairy tales to
and tucked into bed all those nights
and I knew the first time I saw you with her
It was only a matter of time~*~
Cain had topped talking now and was watching Rose. She didn't seem to notice. There was a strange, unexplainable look in his eyes. Evan smiled to himself. He knew that look. He couldn't count how many times he'd had that look when he'd been courting Anna.
Rose looked up at her best friend and mouthed the word 'what?'. He shook his head and replied. 'Nothing. Let's get something to drink.'
Evan, who'd been leaning against the snack table, grinned at them as they came closer. "Having fun, Rosie?" He kissed her cheek.
Rose grinned and nodded. God, she looked more and more like Anna every day. "I am, Daddy. This is great! Who knew they could make the school gym look so nice?"
"We only had to use the gym because the junior class was too damned lazy to do any fundraising." Cain added, tossing a mini pretzel into his mouth. Rose's father shook his head with a smile.
"Cain, can I talk to you for a minute?" Before he could reply, Evan led the teen away from Rose and to the side of the gym.
"Evan, we're not going to have another one of those 'my daughter' talks again like on Rose's birthday, are we?" Evan had known Cain practically since he was born, so he'd allowed the younger boy to call him by his first name.
"No, no, 'course not, Cain." He put his arm around Cain's shoulder, which was pretty easy since they were the same height. "I just want you to know something...I loved her first." Without another word, Evan released Cain and walked away, disappearing into the crowd of dancing students, leaving a slightly confused Cain in his wake.
~*~From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep~*~
Cain grinned down at Rose. "You did it, baby..." He held up ther newborn daughter, Wicked Luna Jiovanni.
Rose smiled weakly and ran a finger down her drowzy baby's face. "She's beautiful, hu?"
"She looks like you."
Rose laughed softly and yawned. "Ugh...I'm tired now..." Her husband leaned over, being careful of Wicked and kissed her forehead.
"Get some sleep, Rosie. You deserve it." A few minutes later, she was out like a light.
Cain leaned back in his chair. It's plastic cover squeaked in protest, but he took no heed. His daughter yawned in his arms, nuzzling her head against his chest.
He grinned proudly. His daughter...His and Rose's baby girl. She already had a fine layer of blond hair covering her head. There was no doubt she'd grow up to be a knock out, just like her mom.
He thought back to Evan's last words to him, the night ofhis junior prom, the night before Rose's father had been killed. 'I loved her first...'
Back then, he'd had no idea what those words had meant. He'd eventually forgotten but now that memory was fresh in his mind as if it'd happened just five minutes ago. Somehow, now, they seemed to make a heck of a lot more sense.
~*~Someday you might know what I’m going through
When a miracle smiles up at you~*~
"Wika, I want you to remember something." Cain spoke softly to his little girl. "I want you to remember now matter what happens, no matter who you become or what you do, I'll always love you. You'll always be your daddy's little girl. Now anfd forever, my little Wika." With a smile he added. "I loved you first."
~*~I loved her first...
I loved her first...~*~
Wika's small, hazel eyes squinted open. She looked up at her daddy, a wide smile starting to form on her tiny face. Cain was almsot positive he had tears in his eyes.
"I love you, baby girl."
<Thanks, Evan....>
