Morning. Juice, sparring, firing range. Forest tracking. Lunch and studying old, dusty books. Lectures on first aid, how to take of yourself with no one looking after you. Lessons in scamming money. No weekends, no holidays. This wasn’t exactly when she’d planned on when she and cliff had dropped out of school to move to Craig Lake, Michigan.
Her new family wasn’t much of what she’s expected either. She managed to avoid them through middle school- staying out at night and ignoring Clifford at school. Not anymore. Sometimes it was hard to remember that he wasn’t her brother these days. Other times she caught him staring at her…
Her early growth spurt had given up, and she wasn’t even as tall as him at her full height. Her lanky frame had barely filled out, even at 16. But she was hardly shy, there was no other human around for miles aside from the two men she lived with, and she hardly cared what they thought of her, going to sparring in undies and sports bra. Hardly.
Clifford was hardly Frank, they were nothing alike. It was almost 4 years and she hadn’t stopped thinking about Frank. He was burned onto ever thought in her head, every memory she had. It was driving her crazy.
She perked up quckly as she came downstairs for breakfast. Today was the day. Willie had left, prolly at Dawn, for some hunt that was too dangerous for them. Finally, a vacation; some alone time. Except for Clifford.

“Morning, cupcake.” Clifford had taken his breakfast into the living room to watch tv, something he wasn’t allowed to do when Willie was around. He wasn’t supposed to be into Willie’s liquor, either.

"Morning, sleeping beauty." Verica growled challengingly

“Willie says we’re not supposed to slack off today.” Cliff snickered, taking a pull from the bottle.

Cliff rolled his eyes, returning his attention to the television.

"I'm going out." verica muttered, heading for the door

“There are kelpies in the lake.” Cliff lied. Every time they went to the water, Cliff had a new monster that was lurking under the surface. “Willie’s gonna kill me if you drown.”

"You're a moron." Verica growled. "There's nothing in the goddamn lake."

"How stupid d'you have to be to get drowned by a goddamn kelpie?" Verica rolled her eyes

Cliff shrugged and snickered. “Happens all the time to the English.”

"Then the English don't have enough collective brainpower to boil a cup of goddamn tea." Verica spat. "'Oh, it's a sopping wet horse standing out here. I think I'll RIDE IT.'"
