“There’s nothing to think about.” Cass cried, eyes pleading. “He’s going to get out of prison eventually, who do you think he’s been plotting revenge against all this time? I won’t let him put her in danger.”

"Cass..." Xander said quietly. "Calm down..."

Cass’ body went rigid and she turned her head, refusing to look at either one of them.
“I would never let anything happen to Kait.” Jack said softly, rubbing at his eyes. “I can protect both of them.”

"You'd better." xander's expression hardened for the first time during the conversation. "I think you can guess what would happen to you if you let ANYTHING happen to her..."

“You think you could do worse to me than what I’d do to myself?” Jack looked at him, eye to eye, for the first time since he’d stepped through the door.
“Oh, you two,” Cass’ voice was small, soft, fragile. “You’re so f**king macho. If he comes for you, it won’t be with knives or chains or bear traps. It will be with a gun. How’re you gonna protect her from that?”

Xander sighed. "Cass... We can't stop him from doing what he wants.... and I'm not gonna tell Kait she can't see her dad anymore."

“You will not take my daughter away from me.” Cass said fiercely.
“I’ll get a security system, I’ll-“ Jack didn’t get a chance to finish that thought.
“You bet your ass you will.” Cass’ voice lost none of its coldness. “Are you done?”
“Yeah, I-“
“Good.” Cass turned her back.

Xander gave Jack a strained expression, somehow mixing a frown and a grin. "You leaving now?"

“Unless Cass wants to invite me to dinner.” Jack slipped back into his old habits, like he’d slipped back into smoking.
“Get the hell out of my house, Jack.” Cass growled, not looking up.

"You heard the lady." Xander said with a small grin, leading Jack to the door and opening it. "....Good luck, man."

“Yeah,” Jack sighed, getting into his truck. “Thanks.”
Cass shivered, once, then sighed, putting her cup in the dishwasher. She waited, very patiently to hear the rev of Jack’s engine, the closing of the front door, and finally the click of the lock. She gave him a few seconds, just enough time to make it back into the kitchen. “Why do you encourage him?”

"Because he's Jack." Xander said slowly. "And because he's not dumb enough to put Kait in danger."

“Can you blame me for worrying?” Cass moved towards him, wanting comfort but not about to ask for it. “Her father being a hunter?”

Xander sighed and hugged her. "Everyone's got their problems, Cass..."

“Not like this, they don’t.” Cass leaned against him, closing her eyes. “If she gets hurt…”

Cass sighed, hugging him back briefly before pulling away. “Eat your sandwich.”
“Hey, mom?” Kait stuck her head around the corner, grinning sheepishly. “Xand said you got me presents.”
Jack pulled into his driveway, feeling exhausted. He dragged himself inside and dropped onto the couch. “I’m back.”

"No need to sound so thrilled." Eva looked away from her computer, glancing at him over her glasses.
"You should get your daughter her presents." Xander said with a grin, happily picking up his lunch.

“Sorry, babe.” Jack smiled a little ruefully. “Getting bitched at really takes it out of a guy.”
“C’mon, sugar.” Cass put on a smile, beckoning her daughter towards a pile of bags on the counter. “Those’re yours.” Kait grinned, ripping through the wrapping.
“Was it pretty?”
