Jack kicked a rock further down the sidewalk, heading towards Eva’s house. He wasn’t going to see her. No, she’d made it plenty clear that she had nothing to say to him. She hadn’t explicitly told him to stay away, but she’d been avoiding him, not returning his phone calls. He wasn’t sure what he’d done wrong and he wasn’t going to risk making it worse by saying something stupid. Still, that didn’t mean he couldn’t go for a walk. And if he happened to walk past her house, that didn’t necessarily mean he was checking on her.
“…Eva…” Jack froze, he hadn’t realized that he’d gotten so far up the street, hadn’t even seen Eva in the driveway. She was loading her mom’s car but that was crazy, graduation had been- what?- two days ago? Three tops. He shifted nervously, glancing between her and the car. “You- you’re leaving already?”

Eva bit her lip, nodding at her mom to head back inside and carefully, oh so carefully, not looking at Jack, not giving any indication that she'd heard him speak. What could she say to that, anyway?
